Getting Answers to Legal Questions – The Art of the Legal Consult

Beyond a google search, people often want to talk to an attorney. Which is fine, but after doing a search for that specialty in your area but, call or email an attorney in that area of law to see if the consult is paid or free.  Many attorneys do charge so it’s best to know what the cost is, though it may well be worth it.  There are attorneys who do a free consult but it’s best to know the length of the free consult and if it’s by phone or in person.  I do a free half hour consult for new legal matters by phone.

When preparing for a legal consultation, have all the information handy as well as a summary of the problem, including a chronology if that’s relevant. It’s frustrating to not get answers to your questions because you are asked for information you don’t have handy or because you haven’t got a concise way of giving the attorney the facts of your situation. Some attorneys actually like any summary, chronology or necessary documents emailed to them in advance, though find that out before you send it, as well as whether there’s any cost for review. Even if it’s a free consult, limit what you send as the review may cut into your time.

Even if you’re stressed, leave concise voicemails if you don’t reach the attorney or if you’re talking to their assistant keep it to the type of issue and if there are any deadlines. Also, during the consult, don’t interrupt or talk too fast as that just makes it difficult for the attorney to make sense of your situation and answer your questions.  Also remember that if you’re upset with someone else, be sure you’re as calm as possible during the consult as some attorneys are reluctant to talk with angry or highly upset people since it’s difficult to get the relevant information, and may indicate to them that the potential client is generally upset, which might affect their advice or willingness to represent you.

Finally, if you don’t feel the attorney has the expertise to assist you or has given you answers that don’t make sense, there’s nothing wrong with getting a second opinion.
